About Mark B.

Mark B. Saku trained at Seattle University School of Law, earning his J.D. in 2006 after concentrating on intellectual property subjects such as copyright, trademark and licensing. He entered law school as the music and digital worlds were shifting under new technologies. That timing shaped the cases and clients he would pursue later.

Early in his career he built ties to the arts and entertainment communities in the Pacific Northwest. He joined The Recording Academy, NW Chapter in 2005. He became a featured member of Washington Lawyers for the Arts in 2006. Those connections put him in regular contact with musicians, producers and small arts organizations seeking practical legal advice.

He has been active in professional societies that intersect with copyright law. He served as Chair of the Northwest Chapter of The Copyright Society of the USA from 2010 to 2012. Since 2013 he has held the role of social media director for the same chapter. Those roles exposed him to policy discussions, emerging issues in digital rights and the shifting norms around licensing.

Saku’s practice draws on the technical and transactional sides of intellectual property. He handles copyright matters, trademark questions and drafting and negotiating licensing agreements. Clients typically include individual creators, small labels and businesses that need help clearing rights, structuring licenses or protecting marks and creative works. He also advises on matters related to online distribution and ownership of digital content.

He operates from Mark Saku Law PLLC. The office provides counsel on a range of IP issues rather than litigating at scale. Saku often works directly with clients to draft agreements, review contracts, and provide strategic advice that reflects the business realities of creative work. That hands-on approach is familiar to artists and small enterprises that prefer practical, plain-language guidance.

Outside of client work he remains engaged in the copyright community in Washington. His tenure in chapter leadership and ongoing involvement as social media director reflect a steady interest in how copyright law affects creators and the institutions that support them. He concentrates his current practice on copyright, trademark and IP licensing matters for creators, arts organizations and small businesses in Washington.
