About Margaret Alice

Margaret Alice Teahan completed a B.A. in English literature and writing at Loyola College in 1985 and earned her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1992. She moved quickly from law school into courtroom work. Those early academic years set a practical tone for a career centered on trial practice and statutory work.

Within a year of earning her law degree, Teahan joined the Maryland Office of the Public Defender as a trial lawyer in 1993. That entry into public defense provided sustained exposure to criminal trials, client advocacy, and the mechanics of courtroom procedure. The experience established her as a practitioner comfortable under pressure and versed in the realities of criminal litigation.

Over the years she combined trial work with participation in the state’s bar organizations. She has been a member of the Maryland State Bar Association since 2013 and the Bar Association of Frederick County since 2011. Her involvement extended beyond membership. From 2015 to 2016 she chaired the Legislative Committee of the Criminal Law and Practice Section Council of the MSBA. She served as a Section Governor on the MSBA Board of Governors from 2017 to 2018 and has been a member of the MSBA Committee on Laws since 2017.

Those organizational roles reflect an interest in the intersection of practice and policy. In 2016 she was named a Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation, an affiliation that brings together lawyers who contribute time and expertise to legal education, scholarship, and access to justice projects. Her bar activity shows sustained engagement in the structures that shape criminal law practice in Maryland.

Teahan’s background is rooted in courtroom representation and in the policy work that follows from that experience. She has balanced client-facing trial responsibilities with roles that involve legislative review and professional governance. Her path from a public defender position to active participation in state bar committees illustrates a career that combines litigation experience and institutional involvement.

She currently practices at Ethridge, Quinn, Kemp, Rowan & Hartinger. At the firm she continues to handle criminal cases and related litigation, drawing on decades of trial experience and long-term engagement with Maryland’s legal community.
