About Mr. J. Edgie
Mr. J. Edgie Russell built a legal career that begins on small-college grounds and leads to the courtroom and the mediation table. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Kenyon College in 1972 and later took his law degree from Suffolk University Law School, receiving a J.D. in 1979. Those years set the foundation for a long presence in Maryland’s legal community.
After law school, Russell became involved in local and state bar organizations. He has been a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Frederick County Bar Association since 1980. Over time he gravitated toward family law issues and toward the organizations that shape practice in that field. He served as president of the Frederick County Bar Association’s Family Law Section, a role that put him in regular contact with judges, clerks, and fellow family law practitioners across the county.
In 2000 he took on the additional role of court-appointed mediator. That appointment expanded his day-to-day work beyond litigation. He has handled mediations in domestic relations matters and helped parties explore negotiated outcomes outside a contested courtroom setting. The mediator role has informed how he approaches case strategy and client counseling.
Colleagues and clients have known Russell for steady participation in professional life. His membership in the Maryland State Bar Association has continued for decades. At the county level he has been active in bar programming and in the work of the family law section, representing practitioners’ concerns and organizing educational opportunities.
Russell’s practice has centered on family law matters. He has handled divorce-related matters, custody and visitation disputes, and the financial aspects that accompany domestic relations cases. His experience mediating cases has been a regular part of how he resolves disputes, whether those matters settle at the negotiation table or proceed to court.
Across roles as advocate, organizational leader, and mediator, Russell has maintained a steady presence in Frederick County and in Maryland’s bar circles. His career spans more than four decades of practice and bar involvement. He continues to serve as a court-appointed mediator and to handle family law matters in Maryland.
