About Marcya

Marcya Betts built a career that moves between government service and private practice. She studied sport management at Ohio University before returning to school for law and business, earning a J.D./MBA from Suffolk University Law School in 2013. The dual degree gave her both legal training and a grounding in organizational and commercial concerns.

Her early professional path led into federal trademark work. In 2018 she joined the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a trademark examining lawyer. In that capacity she reviewed applications, analyzed registrability issues and applied statutory and case law to everyday dispute points. The work required detailed attention to precedent and to the procedural rules that govern federal trademark examination.

After several years at the USPTO she shifted back into private practice. In 2023 she became managing partner at Darden Betts Strategic Intellectual Property Counselors, known in practice as Darden Betts SIPC. The role added administrative responsibilities to the advisory work. She manages firm operations while also advising clients on clearance, registration and enforcement strategies. Her time at the USPTO informs how she evaluates filings and advises on office action responses.

Betts is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and in Massachusetts. She holds membership in the District of Columbia Bar, listed as active from 2023 to the present. That mix of admissions reflects a practice that moves between federal trademark practice and state-based counseling and litigation preparedness.

Colleagues describe her approach as methodical. She favors close analysis of trademark searches and clear writing in responses to examiners and opponents. She handles trademark clearance work, prosecution before the USPTO, and counseling on selection and risk management for brands. Her business training also shows up in client conversations about portfolio strategy and cost-effective decision making.

She stays involved in the practical side of trademark law rather than in academic or policy roles. Her recent work centers on helping organizations clear and secure trademarks, address office actions, and build registries that align with commercial goals. Her current practice centers on trademarks and intellectual property counseling at Darden Betts SIPC.
