About Laura B.
Laura B. Butler trained as a historian before she turned to law. She earned a B.A. in history from Davidson College in 1992 and completed her J.D. at Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1995. Those years set the foundation for a practice built on courtroom procedure and state-level advocacy.
By 2000 Butler was working at Conrad, Trosch & Kemmy, P.A., listed there as a lawyer. Five years later she moved into firm leadership. In 2005 she became a partner at Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C., a position she continues to hold. Her career path shows steady progression from associate-level practice into partnership and firm management.
Butler is licensed to practice in both Virginia and North Carolina. She has been active in the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association for many years, serving on the CLE Committee beginning in 2006 and joining the Family Law CLE Committee in 2009. Colleagues elected her vice chair of the Family Law Committee for 2010–2011, then chair of the Family Law Section for 2011–2012. She has also acted as the Family Law Legislative Liaison for the association from 2009 to 2010 and has served on the association’s board since 2015.
Her engagement extends beyond Virginia. Butler maintains membership in the North Carolina Bar Association and remains involved in bar-related activities in both states. The record shows regular participation in continuing legal education programs and committee work, particularly in areas that intersect with family law practice and legislative developments.
Clients and peers describe Butler as methodical in court preparation and steady under pressure. She balances trial work and client counseling, spending as much time on courtroom strategy as on negotiating settlement terms. That balance reflects her years on committees devoted to family law education and legislative monitoring, which keep her connected to changes in statutes and courtroom procedures across both jurisdictions.
At Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C., Butler combines case work with firm responsibilities. She handles litigation matters, prepares filings, and appears in both state court systems where she is licensed. Her practice has been informed by nearly two decades of committee and board service, which has also shaped how she trains younger lawyers within the firm.
She practices family law at Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C., representing clients in matters across Virginia and North Carolina.
