About Kristin Michelle
Kristin Michelle Russell took a philosophical route into law. She earned a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Louisville in 2005 and completed her J.D. at Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University, in 2009. Those years shaped a foundation in critical thinking and argument that she carried into public service.
Fresh out of law school in 2009, Russell joined the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy as an Assistant Public Advocate. That early work placed her inside the public defense system and introduced her to courtroom practice in state settings. The role was her first professional step and provided everyday exposure to criminal matters and client advocacy.
In 2011 she moved into private practice as a lawyer at Willenborg, Russell & Ireland, PLLC. Five years later she was listed as a partner at Russell & Ireland Law Group, LLC. The transition marks a common path from public defender to private counsel, and it reflects a career spent handling contested matters on behalf of individuals rather than institutions.
Russell is admitted to practice in Kentucky, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and in Ohio. Those admissions allow her to appear in both state and federal courts across the region. She also maintains memberships in local professional organizations, including the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Northern Kentucky Bar Association, which keep her connected to peers and developments in practice.
Colleagues describe her as steady and pragmatic at the courthouse. Her background in the public defender’s office and her years in private practice give her experience on both sides of case management and courtroom preparation. She has handled matters that require courtroom appearances and negotiated resolutions for clients in contested settings.
Russell’s office is Russell & Ireland Law Group, LLC. She has practiced there since the firm’s founding iteration and continues to represent clients from intake through resolution. She appears in state and federal forums where her admissions permit, and she remains active in regional bar circles.
She currently represents clients in criminal defense matters in Kentucky and Ohio and appears in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
