About Ken
Ken Shigley began his legal path in the 1970s after completing a law degree at Emory University School of Law in 1977. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Furman University in 1973. The combination of liberal arts and legal education shaped an early interest in trial work and public service.
His first professional role was as an assistant district lawyer in the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit in 1977. He moved into private practice two years later, maintaining a general practice in Douglasville, Georgia. By 1981 he joined Van Gerpen & Rice as an associate and later became a partner when the firm evolved into Van Gerpen Shigley & Hoffman. In 1990 he practiced with Johnson & Ward LLC and later established Shigley Law LLC, building a practice centered on civil litigation and injury matters.
Shigley is admitted to practice in Georgia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has pursued formal recognition of his trial work. The National Board of Trial Advocacy has granted him board certification in Truck Accident Law, Civil Trial Advocacy, and Civil Pretrial Advocacy. He has also been a certified Civil Trial Advocate through the National Board of Trial Advocacy since 1995.
His involvement in bar governance and legal education runs deep. He served as president of the State Bar of Georgia for 2011–12. He has chaired the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in Georgia since 2012 and serves as a trustee for the Institute for Continuing Judicial Education in Georgia. He has held leadership roles in the American Association for Justice, including chairing the Motor Vehicle Collision, Highway & Premises Liability Section, and he chaired the Southeastern Motor Carrier Liability Institute in 2006. Earlier, he chaired the Georgia Insurance Law Institute in 1994. He also participates in national bar groups such as the American Bar Association House of Delegates and the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and he has been active in the Trucking Litigation Group since 2009.
In the courtroom he handles trucking and motor vehicle collision cases, serious personal injury litigation, and insurance-related disputes. He brings appellate credentials to those matters through admissions to higher courts. His practice combines trial work, pretrial advocacy, and involvement in professional education and policy efforts that affect litigation practice.
Shigley practices as an Atlanta injury lawyer at Shigley Law, LLC. His current practice centers on trial and appellate work in personal injury and motor carrier litigation.
