About Joseph

Joseph Jaap combines an early career in engineering and naval nuclear service with a later transition into the law. He earned a Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University in 1974. Fifteen years later he completed a Juris Doctor at the University of Michigan in 1989. His educational path set the stage for a practice that draws on technical training as well as legal training.

Before turning to law, Jaap spent years in roles that required technical rigor and operational discipline. He served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer and Nuclear Power Plant Engineer. He held a Senior Reactor Operator certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1982 to 1984. He was also licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ohio from 1986 until 2002. Those credentials reflect sustained involvement in complex engineering and power plant operations prior to his legal career.

Jaap moved into legal practice after receiving his J.D. in 1989. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and has maintained ties to the Cincinnati legal community, joining the Cincinnati Bar Association in 2004. Over the years he has brought an engineer’s attention to detail to legal matters that intersect with industry, regulation, and technical dispute. He balances technical literacy with courtroom and transactional work.

Colleagues and clients describe Jaap as an attorney who reads technical reports the way other lawyers read briefs. He has handled matters that require parsing engineering drawings, regulatory filings, and operational records. That background has been useful in cases and counseling that touch on energy projects, construction and design issues, and regulatory compliance. He can explain technical concepts in straightforward terms during hearings or negotiations.

Outside of client work, Jaap’s record includes long stretches of professional certification and operational responsibility before his legal career began. That history informs how he evaluates risk and how he prepares for litigation or settlement. He remains active in the local bar association and continues to draw on both legal training and technical experience in his work. His current practice concentrates on legal matters in Ohio that involve engineering, energy, and regulatory questions.
