About Jonathan P.
Jonathan P. McHugh began his academic path studying political science at Wake Forest University, where he earned a B.A. in 2011. He continued to law school at The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law and received his J.D. in 2011. Those years set the stage for an early start in litigation and courtroom practice.
He entered practice in 2011 as an associate at Fite, O’Brien & Anderson, LTD. That first role put him into day-to-day litigation and client counseling. In 2014 he moved to Livesay & Myers, P.C., joining as an associate and steadily taking on heavier caseloads and trial responsibilities. He was promoted to senior associate in 2018 and became lead senior associate in 2021. The progression reflects a steady rise in firm responsibilities and an expanding role in case strategy and courtroom appearances.
McHugh is admitted to practice in Virginia and is also admitted to federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Those admissions allow him to handle a range of state and federal matters and argue appeals when cases move beyond the trial court.
He maintains memberships in several professional organizations. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. Locally, he belongs to the Loudoun County Bar Association. Earlier in his career he also held memberships in the Fairfax Bar Association from 2012 to 2017 and the Prince William County Bar Association from 2014 to 2016. Those ties keep him connected to peers and to continuing legal education opportunities.
In practice he handles civil litigation and family law matters. He prepares pleadings, manages discovery, and represents clients at hearings and trials. The work requires attention to procedural detail and an ability to shape factual narratives for judges and juries. He also handles appeals in the Fourth Circuit when cases warrant appellate review.
Colleagues describe him as thorough in case preparation and steady in court appearances. He has taken on both contested hearings and longer bench and jury trials. Outside of court, he spends time drafting briefs and advising clients on litigation strategy. He has grown into roles that require supervising junior lawyers and coordinating complex case logistics.
He currently practices at Livesay & Myers, P.C., where he concentrates on family law and civil litigation matters.
