About Jonathan M.
Jonathan M. Herbst built a career that crosses law, sports and financial regulation. He earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of Delaware in 1999 and completed his J.D. at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 2003. Those academic years set the stage for a practice that has moved through private firms and into his own practice setting.
After law school, Herbst joined DeLeonardo, Smith & Associates, LLC in 2005 as a practicing attorney. Two years later he took a position at Royston, Mueller, McLean & Reid, LLP, expanding his courtroom and transactional experience. Over time he moved into partnership-level work and in 2015 became a partner at Friedman & Friedman, LLP. The path through these firms gave him exposure to both client counseling and the operational side of running a law practice.
In 2017 Herbst began practicing at The Herbst Firm. He continues to maintain an active role there. His resume also lists an office association with Benjamin Herbst, Esq., reflecting a small-office arrangement rather than a large-firm structure. The shift to that firm environment coincided with professional certifications that broadened the services he can offer.
Herbst holds two notable certifications. He is licensed as a Maryland Mortgage Loan Originator by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, which allows him to participate in mortgage origination matters in the state. He is also an NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor through the NFL Players Association, a credential that authorizes him to represent professional football players in contract negotiations and related business dealings.
He is admitted to practice in Maryland and has credentials to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He maintains memberships in the Baltimore County Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Sports Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association. Those memberships reflect a practice that spans local, state and national professional networks.
Clients and colleagues describe Herbst as pragmatic and detail-oriented in his approach to legal work. He draws on experience in both transactional and advocacy settings to advise clients on contractual terms, regulatory compliance and deal structure. He represents clients in matters involving athlete contracts and in mortgage-related transactions, and he operates a small practice through The Herbst Firm focused on those areas of law.
