About Jonathan L.
Jonathan L. Kales began his academic path at Bates College before earning his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He built his early groundwork in liberal arts and then turned to law school where he prepared for practice in Virginia. Those formative years set the stage for a practice oriented around dispute resolution and family matters.
He joined Kales & Kales, PLC and rose to partner in 2004. The firm has been his professional home for many years. In that role he has balanced casework, client consultations and the administrative responsibilities that come with partnership.
Kales holds a Virginia Supreme Court certification as a family mediator. That credential underpins much of his work. He regularly participates in mediated sessions and collaborative processes rather than handling every contested matter through litigation.
His involvement in collaborative practice dates back more than a decade. He has been a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals since 2006. He has also been involved with Virginia Collaborative Professionals since 2010 and has served on its executive council. Locally, he became active in Collaborative Professionals of Northern Virginia in 2009 and has served as its president. Those roles have kept him connected to peers who prefer problem-solving approaches to family disputes. His membership in the Fairfax Bar Association goes back to 2000.
Colleagues describe his contributions to local professional groups as steady and practical. He brings his mediation certification into the community through trainings, peer exchanges and case consultations. He is often found working on settlement planning and facilitating discussions that help parties weigh options outside court. He also handles the conventional elements of family law practice that arise when parties cannot reach agreement.
Outside practice, his long-standing memberships reflect a career-long interest in collaborative law and dispute resolution systems. That interest has shaped how he approaches client matters and how he organizes portions of his caseload.
He practices at Kales & Kales, PLC in Virginia and maintains an active role in mediation, collaborative practice and family law matters as part of his current practice focus.
