About Jonathan C.

Jonathan C. Bunge built a legal path that runs from Princeton to the Supreme Court and into private practice. He earned an A.B. from Princeton University in 1984 and a J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law in 1988. Those years set the stage for a career that has moved between public service and large-firm litigation.

Early in his career Bunge served two federal clerkships. In 1988 he clerked for the Hon. James Buckley on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He spent the following year on the team of Justice Byron White at the Supreme Court of the United States. Those clerkships placed him in the center of appellate work and exposed him to high-level legal reasoning and procedural practice.

After his time on the bench, Bunge joined federal service. In 1990 he became Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section and an Assistant U.S. Lawyer in a U.S. Lawyers Office. In that role he handled federal criminal matters and supervised prosecutions. The position provided courtroom experience and an understanding of how federal cases are prepared and tried.

Bunge moved to private practice at the turn of the century. In 2000 he became a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He later joined Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP as a partner in 2015. Those roles placed him at large litigation practices where appeals, trials and complex federal issues routinely arise. Over the years he has worked on matters that draw on his government trial experience and appellate background.

He has been a member of the Illinois State Bar since 1990. That membership has spanned his public and private work and ties him to the courts and professional community in Illinois. Colleagues and clients encounter him as an attorney who understands both prosecutorial strategy and private litigation practice.

Today Bunge is based at the Chicago office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. His practice draws on decades of experience in federal courts, combining work that stems from his time in the General Crimes Section with litigation responsibilities at large firms. He currently practices at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP, where his work centers on federal litigation and trial matters.
