About John

John Werden took a steady path into law. He completed his undergraduate degree at Grinnell College in 1977 and earned his J.D. from Drake University Law School in 1981. Those years set the stage for a lengthy career in litigation and court practice.

After law school, Werden began practicing in Iowa. Over the decades he built a practice that included both state and federal work. He is admitted to practice in Iowa and before federal courts that serve the region. His admissions cover the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Werden’s courtroom experience spans trial and appellate work. He has handled matters in state courts across Iowa and has maintained a steady docket in federal courts. That mix has meant frequent work on pleadings, motions and courtroom hearings, as well as preparation for appeals when cases move beyond the trial level. Colleagues describe him as thorough in preparation and deliberate in courtroom presentation.

Across a multi-decade career, Werden has navigated procedural and substantive issues common to civil litigation. He has experience managing discovery disputes, briefing dispositive motions and counseling clients through the practical consequences of litigation strategy. He has also worked on appeals that require focused legal research and concise appellate briefing. His admissions in both district courts and the Eighth Circuit make him a practitioner familiar with the federal rules and appellate procedures that shape litigation in the region.

Education remained a foundation throughout his practice. The liberal arts training he received at Grinnell College, followed by legal studies at Drake, informs his approach to legal problems. Those early academic experiences contributed to an ability to analyze facts and craft arguments for courts at several levels.

Outside of courtrooms, Werden’s work has centered on meeting client needs within the constraints of litigation. He has balanced case management, client counseling and the demands of court schedules. Today he continues to practice in Iowa and appears in federal venues where admitted. His current practice centers on litigation in Iowa and in federal courts.
