About John
John Rafferty earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Boston College in 2005 and a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 2012. His academic path combined humanities and legal training, a background he has often drawn on in public-interest and prosecutorial work.
He began his professional life in uniform. Commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in 2005, he went on to serve as a logistics officer in Mine Countermeasures Division 31 in 2007. Those early years in the military introduced him to operational planning and chain-of-command decision making, experience that later informed his work in complex legal and policy settings.
Rafferty moved from service to advocacy and research. In 2010 he was a senior legal and policy fellow at Polaris, the anti-trafficking organization. The following year he worked as an anti-human trafficking intern for the International Organization for Migration. After law school he received a Fulbright Research Fellowship through the U.S. State Department in 2012. In 2013 he was an Independence Foundation Fellow with Friends of Farmworkers, Inc., a role that combined legal research with community outreach.
In 2014 Rafferty joined the Chester County District Lawyer's Office as an assistant district lawyer in the Child Abuse Unit. There he handled investigations and prosecutions tied to child welfare concerns. The courtroom work and case preparation deepened his practical litigation skills and his familiarity with interdisciplinary teams that include social services and law enforcement.
He moved into private practice in 2017 when he became a partner at Gawthrop Greenwood, P.C. At the firm he has taken on matters that require litigation experience and an ability to manage complex factual records. Colleagues describe him as methodical; he is often responsible for coordinating discovery and preparing trial materials.
Rafferty maintains active professional memberships. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Chester County Bar Association. He serves on the board of La Comunidad Hispana, where he has also served as chair of risk management. He also holds membership in the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania.
His career crosses public service, research, and courtroom practice. The varied roles — from Navy lieutenant to anti-trafficking work to a child-abuse prosecutor and now partner at a regional firm — shape how he approaches legal problems. He currently practices at Gawthrop Greenwood, P.C., handling litigation and advocacy informed by his prior work in child welfare, anti-trafficking, and public-interest organizations.
