About John M.
John M. McCormick built a legal practice that crosses state lines. He works in both North Carolina and Virginia and has combined private practice experience with municipal planning education.
McCormick earned his law degree from Regent University School of Law in 2007. The curriculum there provided a foundation in litigation, transactional work and legal research that he carried straight into practice. He completed his formal legal studies at a time when many jurisdictions were adjusting zoning and land use rules in response to growth and economic change.
His work in law offices began in the early 2010s. In 2011 he joined Paulson & Paulson as a lawyer, and he moved to Davis Law Group the following year. Those early positions exposed him to client counseling and courtroom procedure. He later joined Hanger Law in 2017, where he continued to expand the scope of his practice and take on more responsibility in case management and client intake.
In 2019 McCormick launched McCormick Law & Consulting. He became the owner and has operated the firm since then. Running his own firm shifted his daily work toward managing client matters across jurisdictions and handling the administrative tasks that come with firm leadership. His practice has involved both advisory work and representation, driven by the legal demands of clients in private and public settings.
Beyond his law office experience, McCormick holds a certification as a Planning Commissioner from the Land Use Education Program. That credential points to familiarity with local planning processes, zoning hearings and the procedural aspects of land use governance. The certification complements the legal training he gained at law school and in his early practice years.
McCormick is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and Virginia. That dual licensure allows him to take on matters that touch both states and to advise on legal questions that cross state lines. Over time his practice has reflected that geographic reach.
Colleagues describe him as thorough in preparing for hearings and deliberate in advising clients about procedural steps. He has moved between firm roles and solo practice in a way that has broadened his perspective on client needs. He currently concentrates his practice on issues arising in North Carolina and Virginia, including matters related to land use and regulatory procedure.
