About John J. Schrot
John J. Schrot Jr. earned his law degree from Michigan State University in 1974 after completing an MBA at the University of Toronto and a B.S. in Business at Wayne State University in 1972. His educational path combined legal training with business studies, a background he later brought to cases that touch on both family and commercial matters.
He began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Harold H. Bobier in 1977 at the U.S. District Court in Bankruptcy for the Eastern District of Michigan. That year in the bankruptcy court offered early exposure to complex financial and procedural issues. He moved into private practice the next year, joining Tyler and Canham P.C. as an associate in 1978. By 1979 he had become a senior associate and partner at Alan R. Miller P.C., where he handled litigation and transactional work for a range of clients.
In 2010 he took on a shareholder role at Berry Moorman P.C., where he continues his practice. Over the decades he also developed a parallel role as an arbitrator and mediator. He has served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association since 1985 and has been active in the Mediation Tribunal Association since 2000. Those roles have kept him involved in alternative dispute resolution alongside courtroom litigation.
Schrot’s professional memberships reflect a mix of business, family law and dispute-resolution interests. He belongs to the Michigan Bar Association’s Family Law and Business Law sections and participates in the American Bar Association’s Litigation, Business Torts and Family Law sections. He is a member of collaborative practice groups including the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan. He also holds memberships in the Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the American Arbitration Association and several local bar and civic organizations.
Community service has been a consistent part of his résumé. He has served on the Birmingham Rotary Club and was its president beginning in 2010. He has served on municipal boards, including the City of Birmingham Ethics Board where he was a past chairman, and he has participated as a facilitator for the Oakland County Circuit Court since 2005. His volunteer work has included roles with the YMCA and local school law day programs.
His background blends litigation, arbitration and mediation, and he engages in both courtroom and out-of-court dispute resolution. He currently practices at Berry Moorman P.C., and his practice focuses on family law, business and commercial disputes, arbitration, and mediation.
