About John J.
John J. Malm began his legal path in the Midwest. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Marketing from Augustana College in 1988 and completed his Juris Doctor at Valparaiso University School of Law in 1993. Those years set the foundation for a practice rooted in Illinois courts and federal filings in the Northern District.
He entered practice in Chicago at Clausen Miller PC in 1992. After several years there he formed a partnership in 1997 at the Law Offices of Stime & Malm, P.C. The partnership lasted until 2001, when he established his own firm, the Law Offices of John J. Malm & Associates, P.C. He has run that office since then, managing the business side of a small firm while supervising client matters and case strategy.
Malm is admitted to practice in Illinois and is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He maintains active memberships in the Illinois State Bar and the Illinois State Bar Association. He is also involved in several local and regional bar groups, including the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and the DuPage, Kane, and Will County Bar Associations. Those memberships keep him connected to developments in state and federal procedure and to colleagues across different practice areas.
Across his career he has balanced firm leadership with courtroom and litigation work. His long-standing association with groups that focus on trial practice signals regular engagement with litigation issues, while his federal admission indicates familiarity with filings and procedures in the Northern District. Colleagues describe him as a lawyer who has moved between firm roles—associate, partner, owner—over a multi-decade career.
Clients at smaller firms often expect hands-on work from their principals. Malm’s firm structure places him in that role: overseeing case preparation, counseling clients, and representing interests in Illinois courts and in federal court when necessary. He has performed those duties through steady practice rather than public-facing officeholder roles or high-profile appointments.
Today he operates the Law Offices of John J. Malm & Associates, P.C., continuing to accept matters that require admission to Illinois courts and to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He currently focuses his practice on representing clients in matters filed in those jurisdictions.
