About Joel

Joel Zimmerman earned his J.D. from the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 2016. He completed a law degree in a period of shifting legal landscapes and entered practice shortly thereafter.

He is admitted to practice in Kentucky. He also holds admission to two federal courts: the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. His professional memberships include the Indiana Bar Association and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Zimmerman served on the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 30th Judicial Circuit and District of Kentucky from 2012 to 2017. That role placed him at the intersection of local judicial selection and community standards. It involved evaluating candidates and contributing to recommendations for judicial vacancies during a five-year stretch.

Colleagues describe his approach as methodical. He prepares filings and arguments with an eye toward court procedure. He works in forums that require careful attention to federal rules as well as state practice. That combination has shaped the kinds of matters he accepts and the clients he represents.

Outside of formal bar work he maintains ties to civic organizations. He holds membership in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, an honorary group linked to the state. He is also listed as an active member of the Indiana Bar Association. Those affiliations reflect a practice that crosses state lines and federal boundaries.

Zimmerman’s training at the Brandeis School of Law set a foundation in litigation and appellate procedure, and his subsequent court admissions expanded the venues in which he appears. He is comfortable arguing motions in state court and presenting civil matters in federal court. He has built a caseload that takes advantage of those admissions and the procedural knowledge that comes with them.

He continues to maintain active membership in professional organizations and federal court admissions that let him operate in both Kentucky and neighboring federal districts. He handles matters that arise in those jurisdictions and concentrates his practice on litigation and court proceedings in state and federal venues.
