About Joel
Joel Thrift began his academic path in Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003. He went on to law school at the University of Notre Dame, receiving his J.D. in 2007. Those years established a foundation in both technical thinking and legal training. They also set the stage for a steady, practice-oriented career.
He entered the legal profession immediately after law school, joining Affleck and Gordon PC as an associate in 2007. The role was his first exposure to day-to-day practice and courtroom work. It gave him experience handling cases, preparing filings, and working directly with clients and opposing counsel. That early period shaped the way he approaches litigation and client communication.
A decade later he shifted to private practice. In 2018 he opened Joel Thrift Law LLC. As owner and principal, he manages the firm’s operations and directs legal strategy for the matters the firm accepts. Running a small firm has required balancing casework with administrative duties. It has also meant building and maintaining professional relationships across the Georgia legal community.
Thrift maintains active membership in several professional associations. He belongs to the Atlanta Bar Association, the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Georgia Bar Association. These memberships keep him plugged into continuing education, peer networks, and developments in state procedure and case law.
Across his career he has worked in Georgia courts and engaged with the state’s procedural framework. His background as an associate and now as a firm owner means he has handled the full lifecycle of litigation in various capacities: counseling clients, drafting pleadings, taking depositions, and appearing in hearings. That practical courtroom experience informs how he prepares cases and communicates options to clients.
Colleagues and clients who work with him can expect a practitioner who is familiar with the rhythms of Georgia practice and the institutions that shape it. He balances advocacy with the operational demands of managing a small law office. His professional activity remains centered in Georgia, where he carries out counseling and representation for clients in matters brought before state tribunals.
As of 2026 he continues to practice through Joel Thrift Law LLC, concentrating his work on matters arising in Georgia courts and legal proceedings within the state.
