About Joel
Joel Rische took an indirect path to law school. He finished undergraduate studies at the University of South Dakota in 2005, then returned to the classroom nearly a decade later to earn his J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 2014. The years between diplomas left him with a different view of legal work and a practical sense of how law fits into everyday disputes.
Fresh from law school, Rische served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Roberto Lange at the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota in 2014. The clerkship placed him in the federal courthouse during a formative year. He saw first-hand how judges weigh motions, manage cases and write opinions. That experience shaped the early contours of his legal judgment.
In 2015 he moved into private practice as an associate at Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, LLP. At the firm he handled matters that required courtroom preparation, legal research and client communication. Colleagues from that period described him as methodical in drafting pleadings and attentive in discovery tasks. The associate role also involved working alongside more senior lawyers on strategy and trial readiness.
Rische is admitted to practice in South Dakota. He maintains connections to the legal community there and has continued to build practical experience in litigation and court procedure since his clerkship and early years at the firm. He has kept a steady course through early-career transitions and a federal clerkship that many lawyers say accelerates legal training.
He balances casework with the routine demands of client representation, court calendars and motion practice. His background—state undergraduate training followed by a law degree and federal clerkship—gives him a mix of regional familiarity and courtroom exposure. He currently practices law in South Dakota.
