About Joan

Joan Fine began her legal path in the academic halls of Ohio Wesleyan University and Boston College Law School. She left law school and entered practice at a time when few women were founding their own firms. She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Virginia and has maintained membership in the Massachusetts State Bar since 1982.

Her early years in the profession took her through a series of firm positions that exposed her to different types of practice. In 1982 she joined Rackmann, Sawyer & Brewster. Two years later she moved to Rubin and Rudman LLP. By 1989 she was at Costello, Dickenson. In 1990 she opened her own office, Law Office of Joan K. Fine, PLC, and has practiced under that name since.

Those moves reflect a steady progression from associate roles in established firms to running a private practice. Along the way she developed relationships in both Massachusetts and Virginia, maintaining active ties to local and state bar communities. She holds memberships in the American Bar Association and the Winchester-Frederick County Bar Association, among others.

Outside the bar, her professional affiliations are broad. She is involved with the Virginia Women Lawyers Association and the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber of Commerce. She is also connected to regional civic and conservation organizations, including the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Blue Ridge Association of Realtors and the Foundation of the State Arboretum. These memberships point to sustained engagement with issues that matter to landowners, businesses and local communities.

Her record shows a career spent in both private firm environments and solo practice. That background has kept her work tied closely to community institutions. Colleagues and contacts see a lawyer who balances the procedural demands of litigation and transactional work with an interest in land and business matters. She has continued membership in the Massachusetts State Bar since 1982 and participates in Virginia legal circles as well.

She manages a small law office she established in 1990 and continues to serve clients from that base. Her current practice centers on real estate, land-use and local business matters.
