About Jay
Jay Yasso has practiced law across Michigan and the surrounding federal courts for more than three decades. He built a career that crosses municipal lines and courtrooms. Colleagues describe a steady presence in litigation circles and in community business organizations.
Yasso began his academic path in economics at Boston College, earning a B.A. He continued to study international relations at Wayne State University, completing an M.A. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1991.
His early years in practice included a stint as an associate at Plunkett & Cooney, P.C. in 1989. He moved into a partner role at Hertz Schram in 1990. Later he joined Sommers Schwartz, where he became a shareholder in 2014. Those moves trace a steady climb through regional firms and into a leadership role at a larger plaintiff-side practice.
Yasso is admitted to practice in Michigan and before multiple federal courts. His federal admissions include the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan and the Northern District of Ohio, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He also serves as a case evaluator in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties.
Professional affiliations touch several legal and business communities. He maintains membership in the State Bar of Michigan and the Michigan Association for Justice. He belongs to the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers and the Sports Lawyers Association, and he holds memberships in several cultural business organizations, including the Arabic American Chamber of Commerce and the Lebanese American Chamber of Commerce. He sits on the board of directors of the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce and is listed as a member of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area.
Throughout his career Yasso has combined courtroom work with civic involvement. He handles matters that require appearances in state trial courts and in federal districts across the region. He is a shareholder at Sommers Schwartz P.C., where he concentrates on litigation in Michigan and federal courts.
