About Jay S.

Jay S. Fleischman built a legal path that began in upstate New York and carries through to courts across the country. He completed his undergraduate work in economics at the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1987 and earned his J.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1991. Those years laid a practical groundwork for the consumer-oriented practice he later developed.

Early in his career he moved into areas that touch ordinary people’s finances. He is admitted to practice in New York and California and is also admitted to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. Over time his professional interests and memberships aligned with organizations that concentrate on bankruptcy and consumer rights. He has been a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers since 2002 and joined the National Association of Consumer Advocates in 2004.

In 2006 he co-founded the Bankruptcy Law Network, an association he remains involved with. That initiative reflects a longer-term investment in the exchange of tactics and ideas among lawyers handling consumer bankruptcy matters. The network has served as a professional forum for attorneys who handle Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases and creditors’ rights issues, and Fleischman helped establish that venue for peer collaboration.

Fleischman practices at Shaev & Fleischman, P.C., where he has handled client matters across the common concerns of consumer debt relief. His work includes representation in consumer bankruptcy filings and in disputes that arise from collection activity. He appears in both state and federal courts, and his U.S. Supreme Court admission indicates the capacity to accept or participate in high-level appellate work when needed.

Colleagues describe him as lawyerly and direct in court filings. He draws on economic training when assessing debt structures and repayment plans. He also draws on long-standing participation in national professional groups to stay current on developments in bankruptcy law and consumer protection.

Outside litigation, he has participated in panels and professional gatherings through the organizations he belongs to, and he has engaged in educational exchanges designed to help other attorneys handle consumer bankruptcy matters more effectively. His career path shows continuity: law school study followed by practice concentrated on consumer finance and bankruptcy law.

He currently practices at Shaev & Fleischman, P.C., representing consumers in bankruptcy and related consumer law matters.
