About Jason
Jason Spangehl is an attorney who has combined immigration practice with higher education consulting over the last decade. He trained in the Midwest and moved into practice soon after earning his law degree. His work has crossed courtrooms and college campuses, blending individual representation and institutional advising.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and philosophy from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1998. He later attended the University of Illinois College of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2010. Those years shaped his interest in public-facing legal work and policy questions tied to education and immigration.
Spangehl began practicing immigration law in 2011 through the Law Office of Jason Spangehl. He has represented noncitizens in administrative proceedings and has participated in cases before the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Early in his post-law school career he also accepted a role at Plexus International as a senior associate and higher education consultant in 2012. That position exposed him to compliance and operational issues faced by colleges and universities that host international students and scholars.
In 2016 he founded Spangehl Higher Education Associates and serves as its principal. The firm provides consulting to higher education institutions on immigration-related policies, international student matters, and institutional processes that affect foreign nationals on campus. His consulting work sits alongside casework for individual clients.
He maintains memberships in professional organizations tied to his practice areas. He is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and its Chicago chapter. He also belongs to the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Champaign County Bar Association. These affiliations have kept him connected to developments in immigration law and higher education compliance since the early 2010s.
Colleagues describe his approach as practical and detail-oriented. He has handled administrative immigration matters and advised institutions on policies affecting exchange visitors, international students, and sponsored scholars. He has balanced individual representation at administrative hearings with behind-the-scenes policy and compliance advisement for schools.
Today he splits his time between maintaining his law office and operating Spangehl Higher Education Associates. He continues to represent clients in immigration proceedings and to advise colleges and universities on immigration, compliance, and international scholar matters.
