About Jane Coco

Jane Coco Cowles built a legal path that moves between tax departments and arts organizations. She earned law degrees from Pace Law School and New York Law School. Those academic years preceded work in both private practice and nonprofit circles.

Her entry into legal work began in 2000 as a paralegal at Grayson & Associates. That early experience introduced her to client work and case preparation. In 2006 she took on a role as a tax associate at Ernst & Young. The same year she taught as an adjunct professor at the European School of Economics, splitting time between the classroom and practice.

In 2008 Cowles advanced to a senior tax associate position at McGladrey. Her years at large accounting firms exposed her to corporate tax matters and client advising in audit-heavy environments. Colleagues from that period describe work that required attention to detail, deadline management and coordination with accounting teams.

Beyond tax practice, Cowles has pursued training in alternative dispute resolution. She is certified in mediation through Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and has served as a volunteer lawyer with that organization since 2020. That qualification complements her service on boards tied to the local arts scene. Since 2020 she has been a member of the Rockland County Bar Association and a board member of the Arts Council of Rockland and the Rockland Music Conservatory. These roles place her at the intersection of legal work and arts administration.

Cowles is licensed to practice in Connecticut, New York and the District of Columbia. Her registration in multiple jurisdictions supports a practice that crosses state lines and engages with regional clients. She continues to draw on earlier experience at national firms while advising smaller institutions and individual clients in the arts and tax spheres.

She practices under the name Jane Cowles, Lawyer and handles matters that reflect her background in tax, mediation and arts-related issues. Her work today blends transactional tax advice, mediation services and board-level counsel for arts organizations. She currently practices as a lawyer addressing tax matters, arts-related disputes and mediation.
