About James P.

James P. Deffet is an attorney who brings a Midwestern academic background to litigation. He earned his J.D. from Drake University Law School after completing a double major in History and Philosophy at Providence College. Those studies inform a methodical approach to legal problems and an interest in both factual detail and underlying principles.

Deffet practices in both state and federal courts. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit, and he holds licenses in Kansas and Missouri. Those admissions allow him to pursue matters at trial and on appeal, and to move between state and federal forums as cases require.

Early in his career he gravitated toward courtroom work. He is a member of the Missouri Association of Trial Lawyers and the Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those associations reflect regular involvement in jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and defense strategy. He has worked on cases that required careful litigation planning and the ability to present complex factual narratives to judges and juries.

Deffet’s courtroom experience is matched by appellate practice. Admission to the Eighth Circuit and to the roll of attorneys allowed to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court gives him the procedural tools to handle preserved issues on appeal and to prepare petitions and briefs for higher review. He combines trial preparation with attention to legal issues that may shape the record on appeal.

Colleagues describe his manner in court as deliberate. He structures testimony and argument to make the record clear. Cross-examination and witness preparation are regular parts of his practice. He also handles pretrial litigation, including motions practice, evidentiary disputes, and case management proceedings in both Kansas and Missouri courts.

Today Deffet continues to represent clients in criminal defense and trial litigation across Missouri and Kansas. He maintains active memberships in statewide professional groups and remains engaged in courtroom practice and appellate work. His current practice represents clients in criminal defense and trial matters in Missouri and Kansas.
