About James
James Malloy built his legal foundation at Duquesne University School of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 2002 after completing a B.S. at Allegheny College in 1999. He entered the profession at a time when courtroom experience and federal practice were becoming increasingly important for attorneys in Pennsylvania. Those early academic years set a practical tone for the work he would later pursue in both state and federal fora.
Malloy is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and holds admissions to several federal courts, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Fifth Circuit, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. These credentials reflect regular involvement in matters that extend beyond state trial courts, and they allow him to handle appeals and federal litigation where clients require representation across different levels of the judiciary.
He is a partner at DFL Legal, where he has served in that role for several years. At the firm he handles a range of matters that involve litigation and counsel for businesses and individuals. His practice has included work in construction-related disputes, informed in part by his membership in the American Bar Association’s Construction Law Section. That association connects him to colleagues who specialize in contract, surety and construction litigation issues.
Malloy also maintains membership in the Allegheny County Bar Association. Those local and national affiliations keep him engaged with developments in case law and procedural practice. He has used those resources to refine courtroom strategy and case management techniques, particularly in matters that proceed to federal court or require appellate briefing.
Within DFL Legal, Malloy’s role as partner requires him to manage complex files, supervise litigation teams and interact directly with clients about strategy and risk. He appears in state and federal proceedings, files appellate briefs when necessary, and works with expert witnesses and opposing counsel to resolve technical disputes. Colleagues describe his approach as methodical and exacting, favoring careful preparation before trial or oral argument.
Outside of the courtroom, Malloy’s background in science from Allegheny College has informed his handling of technically detailed disputes. He combines that educational grounding with courtroom experience to translate complex facts into arguments that judges and juries can follow. He continues to practice at DFL Legal, representing clients in state and federal matters and in construction-related disputes in both trial and appellate courts.
He currently concentrates his practice on litigation and construction law matters served through DFL Legal.
