About James E

James E Merson trained as a communicator before he trained as a lawyer. He studied communication studies at Colorado State University and finished his B.A. in 2002. He then went on to Gonzaga University School of Law, earning his J.D. in 2005.

He began his legal career in Colorado immediately after law school. In 2005 he joined the Colorado Public Defender’s office. There he represented people charged with crimes, handled hearings, and worked cases from arraignment through disposition. The public defender role put him in court regularly and exposed him to a steady mix of urgent calendar work and longer trials.

After his stint as a public defender, Merson moved into private practice. He set up his own firm in Colorado. In that role he continued to represent individuals facing criminal charges. He also advised clients about constitutional issues and pretrial procedures. He combines courtroom experience from the public sector with the case-management demands of running a small practice.

Clients and colleagues describe him as pragmatic and direct in court. He favors clear explanations for clients who are often facing unfamiliar and stressful procedures. His background in communication studies informs how he breaks complex legal points into plain language. That has helped him in client interviews, plea negotiations, and hearings where a concise presentation can make a difference.

Merson’s work history is grounded in criminal defense. He has familiarity with state-level criminal practice in Colorado and understands how the local courts operate. He handles trial preparation, evidentiary hearings, and plea discussions. In private practice he also manages the administrative tasks that come with running a law office, from case intake to calendaring and client updates.

Colleagues note that his path—from undergraduate study in communication to a J.D. at Gonzaga and public defense work—gave him both courtroom exposure and a client-centered approach. He now runs Merson Law Office in Colorado. He represents individuals in criminal matters and manages the day-to-day operations of his practice.
