About Amy
Amy Okubo trained in two states and began her legal life studying politics. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Colorado Boulder, then spent time as a visiting student at the University of Colorado Law School. She completed her Juris Doctor at Boston College Law School in the early 1990s.
Her first major public role came soon after law school. In 1993 she joined the Boulder County District Lawyer Office as Chief Deputy District Lawyer. There she handled day-to-day prosecutorial tasks, managed courtroom matters and worked alongside more senior prosecutors on serious cases. The position placed her at the center of local criminal justice work and gave her frequent courtroom experience.
After years in public service she shifted to defense practice. In 2013 she opened The Law Office of Amy Okubo, LLC and began representing people facing criminal charges. The move reversed roles but kept her inside the same system she had learned to read. That perspective informs how she approaches investigations, plea negotiations and trial preparation.
Okubo’s background spans both sides of the criminal justice divide. She has seen how charging decisions are made and how prosecutors build files. She also understands what defense counsel needs to do to test evidence and protect clients’ rights. Her work includes arraignments, motions practice and jury trials. She handles both misdemeanor and felony matters and represents clients in state proceedings.
Colleagues and opposing counsel note that her litigation experience dates back to the early 1990s. She brings courtroom familiarity that comes from years of adjudicating contested matters. Her practice benefits from that institutional knowledge. She also draws on the procedural training from Boston College and the regional perspective she gained in Colorado.
Outside the courtroom she has maintained a compact, client-centered office. The firm she founded operates as a small boutique practice; it emphasizes direct contact between attorney and client and a practical approach to case resolution. The office handles case intake, evidence review and strategic planning in-house.
As of 2026 she continues to operate The Law Office of Amy Okubo, LLC, representing people in criminal cases and handling litigation and pretrial work in Colorado state courts. Her current practice focuses on criminal defense matters.
