About James D.
James D. Williams earned a broad liberal arts education before turning to law. He graduated from the University of Tennessee8 Knoxville in 2015 with a B.A. that combined political science, philosophy and business administration. He went on to complete his J.D. at the University of Richmond School of Law in 2019, where he studied intellectual property alongside the rest of the curriculum.
From law school classrooms to legal clinics and small firms, Williams built a practical re9sume9. He held internships at the Virginia Poverty Law Center in 2017 and at Hitaffer & Hitaffer, PLLC in 2018. Those early placements exposed him to client intake, research and the day-to-day demands of a working practice.
After graduation he moved into document review and contract work for Trustpoint. One in 2019. That role brought intensive contract analysis and large-scale document matters. In 2020 he appeared as a lawyer with Tingen & Williams, PLLC. The following year he joined Tingen Law, PLLC, where he continues to practice. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Williams participates in several local and statewide professional groups. He has been a member of the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Lawyers Association since 2019. He joined the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association in 2020. In the same year he took on a leadership role with Lawyers for the Arts and serves as chair of that organization. Those affiliations reflect an interest in both intellectual property questions and litigation processes.
Colleagues describe Williams as thorough in document work and careful in contractual matters. His training in intellectual property at Richmond informs how he approaches licensing, rights and creative ownership questions. At the same time, his membership in a trial lawyers association signals familiarity with litigation mechanics and courtroom procedure. He draws on the combination of transactional and litigation experience when assessing cases and counseling clients.
He practices from Tingen Law, PLLC, where he handles intellectual property matters, contract-related work and trial-oriented matters for clients.
