About James
James Cushing built his legal foundation in Pennsylvania. He earned a J.D. from Temple University in 1999 after completing undergraduate work in public policy at Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg, where he received a B.S. in 1997. He also studied public policy at Penn State Abington in 1995. Those years shaped his approach to research and case preparation.
Early in his career Cushing worked as a research lawyer and as an associate. In 2002 he served as a research lawyer for Legal Research, Inc., helping to assemble the factual and legal analysis that trial lawyers rely on. That same year he took on an associate role at the Law Office of Faye Riva Cohen, P.C., where he handled matter preparation, client interviews and courtroom filings. The two positions gave him exposure to both behind-the-scenes legal work and client-facing responsibilities.
Cushing is licensed to practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He has worked across both jurisdictions, undertaking tasks that require familiarity with regional court procedures and local rules. His background in public policy and research informs how he evaluates cases and prepares arguments for attorneys and clients in multi-jurisdictional settings.
Beyond paid work, Cushing has a long-running volunteer role at the Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia. He has served as a volunteer lawyer there since 2007, providing pro bono assistance to individuals who seek legal help through the clinic. That ongoing volunteer work has kept him connected to community-level legal needs and has added a steady stream of practical, client-centered experience to his resume.
Colleagues describe him as methodical and detail-oriented. He prefers to let the work speak for itself and to rely on careful preparation when presenting matters to courts or negotiating with opposing parties. He has moved between firm-based roles and research-oriented positions, and those transitions reflect an interest in both the substantive and procedural sides of cases.
Today Cushing continues to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He maintains an active role in legal matters across those states and remains involved with volunteer legal services in Philadelphia. He currently concentrates his practice on legal matters in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
