About James Alan
James Alan Davis began his academic path in the Rocky Mountain region. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and economics from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2009. After several years, he returned to law school, finishing his Juris Doctor at the University of Wyoming College of Law in 2016.
He moved into public defense immediately after law school. In 2016 he joined the Colorado State Public Defender’s Sterling Regional Office as a state deputy public defender. In that role he represented clients in state court, handling arraignments, pretrial motions and trial work for a range of criminal matters. The position required courtroom time and work on case strategy, evidence review and client counseling.
In 2019 Davis transitioned to private practice as an associate lawyer at Colorado Legal Defense Group. That move carried him from a government defender’s office into a firm environment that handles criminal defense across several Colorado locations. As an associate he continued to represent people charged with misdemeanors and felonies, working on pretrial negotiations, hearings and jury trials when cases proceeded that far.
His career reflects steady courtroom experience gathered in public and private settings. He has practiced in Colorado courts and remains licensed to practice in the state. Over the years he has balanced heavy caseloads and the procedural demands of criminal litigation. He has worked across multiple offices of the same firm, bringing consistent defense representation to clients in different parts of the state.
Outside the courtroom, Davis’s record shows professional memberships, although specific organizations are not listed here. His training and early public defender work shaped the client-centered approach he brought to the firm environment, where he continued to handle a broad array of criminal matters.
Today he is based at Colorado Legal Defense Group and has handled matters out of the firm’s Colorado Springs and Greeley offices as well as other locations. He practices criminal defense in Colorado and represents individuals at various stages of criminal proceedings, from initial charge through trial and sentencing when warranted. He currently practices criminal defense at Colorado Legal Defense Group.
