About J. Javier
J. Javier Gutierrez began his academic path in accounting at St. Mary’s University, where he earned a B.B.A. in 2000. He moved on to New York University School of Law and received his J.D. in 2004. Those years set the groundwork for a legal career that combined courtroom work and business-oriented litigation.
Fresh out of law school, Gutierrez served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerry L. Buchmeyer in the Northern District of Texas, Dallas, in 2004. The clerkship gave him early exposure to federal practice and to the mechanics of trial and appellate procedure. He joined Cox Smith Matthews in 2005 as a business litigation lawyer, where he worked on commercial disputes and litigated matters in state and federal courts.
In 2007 he opened The Gutierrez Law Office, Inc. That move shifted his day-to-day work from a larger firm environment to managing a practice across multiple South Texas locations. His offices include bases in Houston, Corpus Christi, and Alice. He has represented clients in a range of business and civil matters and has practiced before state courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Gutierrez’s professional involvement extends beyond casework. He has been a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and the American Association for Justice. He served as a director of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association from 2014 to 2015. Earlier, he chaired a panel of the College of the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee between 2008 and 2014. He was also president of the Coastal Bend Bar Association from 2008 to 2010. Those roles reflect sustained participation in bar governance and trial lawyer organizations.
Clients and colleagues alike note his experience in business litigation and civil trials. He has handled disputes arising from contracts and business relationships, and he has taken cases through both trial and appellate stages. His practice has required familiarity with procedural rules in Texas courts and federal courts within the Fifth Circuit.
Across nearly two decades of practice, Gutierrez has combined trial work with management of a regional law office. He continues to maintain active practice in Texas and before the Fifth Circuit. His current practice focuses on business litigation and civil trial matters.
