About Gerald W.

Gerald W. Sousa began his academic journey at Boston University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from New England School of Law. Those formative years set the stage for a long career in litigation and court practice across Massachusetts and the federal system.

After law school, Sousa entered private practice and, in 1983, helped establish the Law Offices of Sousa & Sousa. He has served as a founding partner since that year. Over decades in practice he has handled cases at multiple levels of the judiciary. He is admitted to the Massachusetts bar. He is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, which has allowed him to pursue both trial and appellate work.

The arc of Sousa’s career is steady rather than flashy. He built a practice that spans trial work and appeals and that draws on courtroom experience developed over many years. Colleagues describe him as someone who prefers direct engagement in courtrooms and conferences. He has maintained memberships in local and statewide professional groups, including the Plymouth County Bar Association, the Bristol County Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Bar Association. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Inside the office, Sousa has overseen case development and counsel strategy at the firm. The Law Offices of Sousa & Sousa has operated as a small firm where partners and staff collaborate closely on filings, discovery and advocacy. Sousa’s long tenure at the firm means he has guided younger lawyers through courtroom procedure and practical tasks of litigation. He has also represented clients in federal district court and argued matters in the First Circuit when appeals have been necessary.

Now practicing into the 2020s, Sousa continues to work from the firm he helped found. He divides his time between trial preparation, court appearances and appellate briefs. He remains active in bar organizations and local legal circles. He continues to practice from the firm’s offices, handling trial and appellate matters in state and federal courts.
