About Gary J.
Gary J. Hillier built a path to law that began outside the United States. He studied economics at Swansea University in Wales and later returned to Texas for legal training. He earned his J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2018. The combination of an international undergraduate background and a Texas law degree shaped his perspective as he entered practice.
After law school he moved directly into private practice. In 2018 he opened The Hillier Law Office, PLLC, and took on the role of owner and lead lawyer. He has operated the firm since then, building a small practice that centers on courtroom work and client representation in Texas. The decision to start a solo firm allowed him to manage case strategy and courtroom preparation personally.
Hillier’s memberships reflect the work he pursues. He is a member of the Order of Barristers, an organization that recognizes skill in trial advocacy and oral argument. He also belongs to the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Those affiliations signal regular engagement with criminal defense practice and with the local and state legal communities.
In court he emphasizes preparation and advocacy. That approach appears in his trial-oriented resume and in the professional groups he joined after law school. Colleagues have noted his presence at association events and continuing legal education programs, where trial procedure and criminal defense topics often dominate the agenda.
Clients come to The Hillier Law Office for matters that must be handled in Texas courts. He handles arraignments, pretrial motions, plea negotiations and trials, and he manages the related investigative and procedural steps that criminal cases require. He describes the work as detail-driven and often time-sensitive. He prefers to keep the office small so that he can give close attention to individual files.
Outside the courtroom he maintains membership in professional groups that support defense lawyers across the state. He has remained active in those associations since 2018, attending meetings and contributing to local defense networks. That activity keeps him current on practice developments and on changes to criminal law in Texas.
Today he practices as the principal attorney at The Hillier Law Office, PLLC, representing clients in criminal defense matters in Texas.
