About Francisco J.

Francisco J. Botto began his legal path with a broad liberal arts foundation and a law degree earned in the early 1990s. He studied at Amherst College before attending Mount Wachusett Community College, and he completed his J.D. at Northwestern University School of Law in 1992. Those years set the groundwork for a career spent practicing in Illinois.

After finishing law school, Botto entered private practice in Illinois. He joined the firm that became Botto Gilbert Lancaster - Lawyers at Law and rose to partner in 2001. That promotion reflected more than title; it came after years of courtroom work and client representation across the region. Colleagues describe him as steady under pressure and practical in the way he manages cases.

Botto’s memberships underline the kinds of matters he handles. He belongs to the McHenry County Bar Association and the State Bar of Illinois. He also holds memberships in both the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those affiliations keep him involved in the criminal defense community at the local, state and national level.

In practice, Botto has concentrated on criminal defense for most of his career. He works on cases ranging from early-stage investigations to matters that require court motions and hearings. He handles client intake, case planning and courtroom advocacy. He is known among peers for a methodical approach to preparing for trial and for attention to procedural detail.

Botto’s day-to-day work combines client counseling with litigation. He spends time preparing briefs, arguing motions and negotiating resolutions when those are in a client’s interest. He has represented individuals in McHenry County and elsewhere in Illinois and regularly interacts with prosecutors, judges and court staff. His experience at a firm that carries his name means he also handles matters related to firm management and mentoring junior attorneys.

Outside court, Botto participates in association activities that provide continuing legal education and professional networking. He keeps current on developments in criminal law through the State Bar and national organizations. He remains based at Botto Gilbert Lancaster - Lawyers at Law and practices in Illinois. He currently concentrates his practice on criminal defense matters in Illinois.
