About Evan
Evan Winer graduated from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1985 after earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology and communication from the University of Iowa in 1980. His academic background combined social science and rhetoric, a foundation that would shape a career centered on courtroom work and public defense. He later returned to Loyola as an adjunct professor, sharing practical insights with law students.
He began his public-sector career in Cook County, serving as a felony trial assistant in 1989. That early trial work involved handling serious criminal matters at the trial level. He moved to Lake County and again served as a felony trial assistant in 1993. Those years in county public defender offices established his trial practice and familiarity with the day-to-day demands of criminal litigation.
Also in 1993 he joined the Law Offices of Winer & Winer as a partner. The firm role followed his public defender work and his short stint in academia. As a partner he handled a range of criminal matters, representing clients in trial courts and managing case strategy over the life of a file. He has been admitted to practice in Illinois and in the Seventh Circuit, which allows him to handle appellate matters within that federal circuit.
Winer’s courtroom experience centers on felony trials and other criminal proceedings. He has worked on cases that required evidentiary hearings, plea negotiations and jury trials. Colleagues and former students note the practical orientation of his teaching and practice; he emphasizes courtroom procedure, witness preparation and trial presentation in both settings.
Outside the courtroom he is active in local bar groups. He holds memberships in the Lake County Bar Association, where he participates in the Criminal & Traffic Committee, the Chicago Bar Association and the North Suburban Bar Association. Those affiliations keep him connected to developments in criminal law and local practice rules. They also provide a forum for continuing legal education and peer discussion.
He maintains an office in Skokie and continues to handle criminal defense work at trial and on appeal. His current practice involves representing clients in state and federal matters from the firm’s Skokie office, handling both trial-level cases and appellate filings.
