About Erik
Erik Helgesen earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Weber State University in 2008. He went on to study law at Michigan State University College of Law and received his J.D. in 2011. Those years combined training in practical business matters with formal legal education. They set the pattern for a career spent working on issues rooted in local and state practice.
Helgesen began his professional career at Helgesen, Houtz & Jones in 2011. He joined the firm the same year he completed law school and has worked there since. Early on he took on a range of assignments that exposed him to courtroom procedure, client counseling and the demands of preparing cases for trial or settlement negotiations. Colleagues describe him as steady and precise in his handling of factual and procedural tasks.
Over time Helgesen’s work has been shaped by the day-to-day realities of practicing law in Utah. His caseload requires attention to state rules and statutes, and to the practical steps clients must take to protect their interests. He approaches matters with an emphasis on thorough factual preparation and plainspoken communication with clients. That approach helps clients understand legal options and consequences without legalese.
Clients and other lawyers encounter Helgesen most often in the routine—but crucial—tasks that keep cases moving. He prepares pleadings, conducts legal research, drafts agreements and participates in negotiations. He also handles courtroom appearances when cases require it. His professional rhythm is a mix of written work and in-person advocacy, the kind of steady work that resolves disputes and moves transactions forward.
Today Helgesen continues to practice at Helgesen, Houtz & Jones in Utah. He represents clients under Utah law and manages both contested and noncontested matters for individuals and businesses. He remains based at the firm where he began his career and focuses his practice on serving clients in the state of Utah.
