About Elizabeth Herbst
Elizabeth Herbst Schierman combined a technical undergraduate degree and a law degree early in her career. She earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho in 1998 and received her J.D. from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2002. That dual training formed the foundation for her move into intellectual property work.
After law school she spent a year clerking for the U.S. Courts in the District of Idaho. The clerkship exposed her to federal practice and appellate procedure. It also sharpened her legal research and writing during a formative stage of her career.
She entered private practice as a patent lawyer in 2006 at Dykas & Shaver, LLP, where she worked on patent matters for multiple clients. In 2011 she joined TraskBritt, P.C. as a patent lawyer. Over the years she has registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and gained admissions in Idaho and Utah.
Her technical background informs her patent work. She prepares and prosecutes patent applications and advises clients on intellectual property strategy. Her education in chemical engineering is relevant to the kinds of technologies she addresses in filings and opinions. Colleagues note that she brings an engineer’s precision to claim drafting and technical description.
Schierman has stayed active in professional circles. She served the Intellectual Property Section of the Idaho State Bar in several leadership roles, including secretary for 2007–2008, chair for 2009–2010, past chair for 2010–2011, and chair again for 2012–2013. Since 2008 she has been a member of the University of Idaho Department of Chemical Engineering Advisory Board.
Those roles reflect a steady involvement in the intersection of law and engineering. Her work in bar sections included organizing educational programs and contributing to policy discussions that affect patent practitioners in the state. Her advisory board membership keeps her connected to developments in engineering education and industry needs.
Today she practices at TraskBritt, P.C., working from the firm’s offices to serve clients in patent prosecution and counseling. Her current practice focuses on patent preparation, prosecution, and client advising in areas related to chemical and engineering technologies.
