About David
David Friedman earned his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2003. He came to the law after study in the Midwest and soon found work in public interest settings. His legal education set the groundwork for a career that has moved between direct service, advocacy, and private practice.
He began his post-law school career as a public interest fellow in 2006 at the Coalition for Debtor Education. The following year he joined The Financial Clinic as a lawyer, where he advised clients facing financial distress and worked on consumer-oriented projects. In 2009 he became a partner at Friedman Murray, PLLC. He is admitted to practice in New York and Minnesota and has handled matters in both jurisdictions.
Friedman’s professional memberships reflect the kinds of cases he takes. He has been a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates since 2007 and joined the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers in 2010. Those affiliations place him in a network focused on consumer rights, debtor remedies, and bankruptcy practice. He has practiced at the intersection of consumer law and bankruptcy for much of his career.
In day-to-day work he represents individuals in bankruptcy filings and related litigation. He counsels clients on the range of debt relief options, negotiates with creditors, and handles adversary proceedings when disputes arise in bankruptcy court. He also works on consumer protection claims that overlap with insolvency issues. His experience includes client intake, case strategy, and courtroom advocacy on behalf of people seeking to address overwhelming debt.
Since becoming a partner at Friedman Murray, PLLC in 2009 he has led cases and mentored younger attorneys at the firm. His background in public interest work informs how he approaches consumer matters in private practice. He remains active in professional organizations that track developments in bankruptcy law and consumer protection. He currently focuses on consumer bankruptcy and consumer protection matters.
