About Daniel J.
Daniel J. Miller studied philosophy and sociology as an undergraduate, earning a B.A. from Emory University in 1989 after completing an A.A. at Oxford College in 1987. He continued his legal education at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, receiving his J.D. in 1997. Those years framed a shift from liberal arts toward courtroom practice.
He began practicing law soon after law school. His first recorded position was as a lawyer at Michael I. Ashe, P.C., in 1998. A few years later he struck out on his own. In 2001 he opened his firm, The Law Office of Daniel J. Miller, and has operated it since. The change marked a move from associate-level work to the responsibilities of running a small firm and carrying a caseload as principal counsel.
Miller is admitted in Virginia and to multiple federal courts in the state. Records show admissions to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in 1999 and to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia. He is also admitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Those admissions allow him to handle both district-level litigation and bankruptcy matters that arise out of his clients cases.
He maintains memberships in local and national bar organizations. Those include the Virginia State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Virginia Beach Bar Association, the Norfolk/Portsmouth Bar Association and the Chesapeake Bar Association. He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and Virginia Trial Lawyers. Professional listings indicate he has been recognized in a Top 100 Trial Lawyers list for criminal defense starting in 2015.
Millers practice history and memberships point to courtroom work and criminal defense among his regular matters. Over time he has balanced trial practice with the administrative duties of running a small office. He handles arraignments, pretrial motions, bench and jury trials, and related post-conviction matters when his clients require it. His admissions to bankruptcy courts also let him address financial issues that overlap with criminal cases.
He continues to lead The Law Office of Daniel J. Miller in Virginia. He currently concentrates his practice on criminal defense and trial representation.
