About Daniel E.

Daniel E. Kann earned his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Utah and went on to receive a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2003. His academic path combined reporting and the law, equipping him to analyze facts and communicate them clearly in court and counsel rooms.

Early in his career he volunteered at Bet Tzedek Legal Services in 2004, handling matters that exposed him to client-centered public interest work. He spent a year as an associate at The Kavinoky Law Office in 2005. In 2006 he moved into public defense, serving as a deputy public defender in Kern County. That period sharpened his courtroom skills and gave him day-to-day trial experience across a broad range of criminal matters.

In 2008 he founded Kann California Law Group Inc. and took on private practice. A year later he accepted an of-counsel role with the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, adding policy-oriented advocacy to his roster of legal activities. His career has crossed public defense, private practice, volunteer representation and policy engagement.

Kann has been admitted to the State Bar of California and to the United States District Court for the Central District of California, both since 2004. He maintains memberships in several professional groups, including the California Public Defenders Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the California Lawyers for Criminal Justice and the California DUI Lawyers Association. He also remains connected to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, reflecting an ongoing interest in the evolving legal landscape around cannabis.

Colleagues and clients often note his steady courtroom approach. He handles arraignments, motions, trials and sentencing hearings. He has represented clients in a range of criminal cases, including driving under the influence matters and offenses involving controlled substances. His work in public defense and private practice has required frequent appearances in state courts and, when cases have federal components, before the Central District.

He balances casework with organizational involvement. Memberships in professional associations keep him current on changes to criminal law and DUI practice standards. His experience in both the public and private sectors informs how he evaluates cases and communicates risk to clients.

Kann practices law from his firm, Kann California Law Group Inc., where he manages client representation and case strategy. He currently focuses his practice on criminal defense, DUI cases and matters that intersect with cannabis law.
