About Joaquin
Joaquin Nava earned his J.D. from Ventura College of Law in 2008 after beginning his legal studies in 2004. His academic path placed him in the California legal community at an early stage and set the groundwork for a career spent almost entirely in public defense and criminal practice.
He began working as a Deputy Public Defender with the Orange County Public Defender's office in 2008. That role was his first courtroom exposure as an attorney. In 2013 he moved to the Ventura County Public Defender, where he continued to represent people facing criminal charges. Those years in county public defender offices offered steady trial experience and regular work on arraignments, pretrial hearings and jury trials.
In 2015 Nava added teaching to his professional life. He served as a Professor of Law at The Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law. In the classroom he taught aspiring lawyers about criminal procedure and trial practice. Students who took his courses encountered a practitioner who could translate courtroom routines into lessons and assignments.
In 2019 he opened the Law Office of Defender Joaquin Nava and listed himself as Lawyer At Law. Founding his own office marked a shift from working within county systems to running a private practice that draws on years of public defense work. His practice combines courtroom experience from the public sector with the case-handling responsibilities that come with representing clients in private practice.
Across his career Nava has remained centered on criminal matters. His professional track reflects sustained time in public defender offices, classroom instruction on procedural and trial topics, and the independent practice he runs today. Colleagues note he brings familiarity with courtroom procedure and client counseling to everyday casework, and his transition to private practice has meant carrying those skills into a new setting.
He is licensed to practice in California and continues to maintain an active presence in the legal community there. He currently concentrates his practice on criminal defense.
