About Craig T.

Craig T. Merritt earned his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1980 after completing his undergraduate studies at Duke University in 1977. Those years set the stage for a legal career that now spans more than four decades. The chronology is simple: undergraduate studies at Duke, then three years at UNC School of Law culminating in a J.D. in 1980.

After law school Merritt built a practice that brought him into federal and state courts across Virginia and beyond. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and holds admissions to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit, the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Those credentials have structured the kinds of matters he handles and the forums in which he appears.

Merritt is a member of several professional organizations. He serves as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and of the American Bar Foundation. He also maintains memberships in the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, and the Federal Bar Association. Locally, he served as president of The Bar Association of the City of Richmond for the 2012–2013 term, a role that placed him at the center of civic and bar activities in Richmond during that year.

He practices through MerrittHill, PLLC. The firm listing appears on his professional profile and is the office from which he conducts his work. Over the years his practice has brought him into bankruptcy courts as well as trial and appellate courtrooms. He has handled matters in federal district courts and on appeals in regional and national appellate courts.

Colleagues and court records describe a lawyer who has sustained a long presence in both litigation and bankruptcy proceedings. He continues to appear in federal and state courts and remains active in bar organizations that reflect the federal and appellate dimensions of his admissions. He currently practices at MerrittHill, PLLC, representing clients in matters across state and federal courts.
