About Colette

Colette Katz trained first as an artist and later as a lawyer. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University in 1987, studying psychology, women’s studies, literature and art. She went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts at the City University of New York’s City College in 2000, where painting, sculpting and art history were central to her studies. Katz returned to school for a law degree and received a J.D. from New York Law School in 2007, concentrating on property, wills and trusts, and corporate law.

Her legal career began in the mid-2000s. In 2007 she worked on a per diem basis for multiple firms, taking assignments that ranged across transactional and estate matters. That year also marks the start of her membership in professional associations, a record that continues into the present. Practical, hands-on work in those early years appears to have shaped the way she runs her own practice.

Katz launched her private practice in 2010. Records list her as owner of the Colette Katz Law Office in 2010 and again in 2017. The firm has handled matters tied to the areas Katz studied in law school: property issues, wills and trusts, and corporate questions. She has managed cases and client matters from intake through resolution, often working directly with individuals and small businesses to resolve title, estate and entity concerns.

Her academic background is unusual for a lawyer. The MFA and earlier arts and literature studies give her a different perspective on technical documents and client storytelling. She has combined that perspective with legal training focused on the structure of property rights, fiduciary duties and corporate relationships. Colleagues describe her approach as methodical and detail-oriented, rooted in careful document review and plain-language explanations to clients.

Katz continues to practice in New York. She divides her time between client counseling, estate matters and corporate filings. Her current practice focuses on property, wills and trusts, and corporate matters.
