About Christopher

Christopher Mills took a traditional academic path into law. He earned a B.A. in economics from Furman University in 2009 and went on to receive his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2012. Those years set the stage for a career that has alternated between high-level appellate work and nonprofit advocacy.

Fresh out of law school, Mills served as a law clerk to Judge David B. Sentelle on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The clerkship was followed by a stint in private practice at Winston & Strawn, where he worked in the appellate and critical motions practice beginning in 2013. He handled briefs and argument preparation on complex appeals and emergency filings during that period.

In 2018 Mills returned to the courthouse in a different role, serving as a law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court. That position is part of a short list of experiences that often shape an attorney’s approach to constitutional and appellate questions. After the clerkship he joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough as a partner in 2019, taking on higher-profile litigation and management responsibilities.

Mills spent 2020 as a Constitutional Law Fellow at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. The fellowship placed him in public-interest litigation on matters involving religious freedom and related constitutional claims. He then moved to found Spero Law LLC in 2021. The firm represents clients in appeals, emergency motions, and constitutional disputes.

His career shows repeated engagement with appellate procedure, constitutional issues, and motion practice. Those subjects recur in the roles he has held: federal clerkships, appellate practice at a large firm, a Supreme Court clerkship, and a fellowship focused on religious liberty. Colleagues and records note his experience drafting appellate briefs, preparing petitions, and managing high-stakes procedural filings.

Mills maintains membership in the South Carolina State Bar. He has combined private practice and public-interest work in ways that let him move between courtroom roles and advocacy projects. The office he founded, Spero Law LLC, handles appeals and constitutional matters for clients who require urgent filings and strategic legal arguments. He currently practices at Spero Law LLC, where his practice focuses on appellate and constitutional matters, including religious liberty cases.
