About Charles

Charles Cromwell built his academic foundation at two well-known institutions. He earned a B.A. in American history from Harvard University and later returned to Montana to complete both a J.D. and an M.A. in Public Administration at the University of Montana. Those degrees gave him grounding in law and public policy and set the stage for a career that spans state and federal practice.

After law school he obtained admission to practice in Montana and before the Federal Circuit. He has maintained an active relationship with the Montana State Bar. His membership in the bar’s Veterans Law Section dates to 2015, reflecting long-standing professional interest in issues affecting veterans and veterans benefits law.

Cromwell’s ties to legal education run parallel to his practice. Since 2014 he has served on the University of Montana’s Clinical Board of Visitors. In that role he has worked with faculty and students on the administration and oversight of clinical programs. The position keeps him engaged with hands-on legal training and exposes him to emerging questions in public and administrative law.

On the bench and in filings, Cromwell has dealt with appellate work and administrative appeals. His admission to the Federal Circuit positions him for cases that move beyond state tribunals. He handles matters that require attention to statutory detail and appellate procedure. Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing briefs and deliberate in oral argument. That steadiness matters in appeals, where outcome often turns on nuance rather than spectacle.

Outside courtroom hours he remains connected to professional networks in Montana. His activity in the Veterans Law Section places him among lawyers who exchange practice strategies and updates on procedural developments. His work on the university board keeps him linked to the next generation of lawyers and to practical training projects that serve the community.

He currently practices in Montana, handling veterans benefits appeals and federal appellate matters.
