About Chance

Chance Sturup entered law after a dual undergraduate course of study at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in history and communications. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina School of Law and received his J.D. in 2021. The combination of humanities and communications training informs his approach to legal writing and courtroom presentation.

He began practicing law after law school and is admitted to practice in South Carolina and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Early in his career he joined Cromer Babb & Porter, LLC as an associate lawyer. In that role he works on matters that move through state trial courts and through appellate channels, preparing filings, managing discovery, and arguing motions in support of clients’ positions.

Sturup maintains active memberships in several professional organizations. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Association for Justice, the Richland County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is also connected to the University of South Carolina Honors College. These memberships keep him engaged with peers and current legal thought on litigation practice and court procedure.

Colleagues describe him as an early-career attorney who combines a methodical study of facts with an interest in persuasive communication. He relies on careful research and straightforward drafting when preparing briefs. He spends time refining appellate arguments and trial strategies. That work is steady and detailed. He has not been publicly credited with any specific landmark cases in the materials provided here.

Outside the office he has drawn on his undergraduate studies in history to contextualize legal disputes, and his communications training to present complex information clearly to juries and judges. He has pursued continuing legal education opportunities and participates in association meetings and local bar events. He lives and practices in South Carolina and has appeared in matters that reach both trial and appellate adjudication. He currently practices as an associate at Cromer Babb & Porter, LLC, handling cases in South Carolina and matters before the Fourth Circuit.
