About Cathleen A.

Cathleen A. Dettmann earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2009. She moved from law school into practice in Wisconsin and established a courtroom-centered career that spans state and federal matters. She is known among colleagues for a methodical approach to litigation and an interest in appellate procedure.

Early in her career she gained admission to practice in federal courts, including the Western and Eastern Districts of Wisconsin and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Those admissions have allowed her to handle cases that cross trial and appellate boundaries. She has represented clients in matters filed in state court and in federal court, advising on procedural and substantive issues that arise at each level.

Dettmann serves as a shareholder at Palmersheim Dettmann, S.C., where she works alongside other litigators. In that role she takes on trial preparation, motion practice, and appellate briefing. Her work requires attention to detail and frequent coordination with clients and co-counsel. She balances courtroom appearances with the written advocacy that often decides complex disputes before an appeal proceeds.

Her professional life includes active involvement in local and statewide bar groups. She holds the position of President-Elect of the Dane County Bar Association, a role that places her in the center of programs and initiatives affecting lawyers in Madison and the surrounding counties. She is also a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Legal Association for Women Lawyers. Outside those organizations she participates in the James E. Doyle Chapter of the American Inns of Court, an organization that emphasizes mentorship and professional ethics.

Dettmann is an Associate Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an affiliation that connects trial lawyers across jurisdictions. Colleagues point to that membership and her dane county leadership role as indicators of a lawyer who engages with the profession beyond individual casework. She has taken part in bar activities that shape continuing legal education and professional standards.

She returns frequently to courtroom practice and written advocacy. Her cases have required coordination between trial strategy and appellate planning. At Palmersheim Dettmann, S.C. she continues to represent clients in civil litigation and appellate matters in state and federal courts, including federal district courts and the Seventh Circuit.
