About Brian
Brian Winterhalter built his legal foundation at the University of Virginia. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning in 2002. He stayed at UVA for law school and earned his J.D. in 2007.
After law school, Winterhalter joined Cooley Godward Kronish LLP as an associate. In that role he worked on matters assigned by the firm and collaborated with colleagues across practice teams. He has been admitted to practice in Virginia and maintains a professional presence there.
His education blends planning and law. That combination shaped his early professional interests and informed how he approaches legal problems. During his time in practice he handled research, drafting, and client-facing work customary to associates at large firms. He has experience working in an office environment outside the downtown legal centers, based in Reston, where he met local counsel and corporate clients on regional matters.
Colleagues describe Winterhalter as methodical. He favors clarity in written work and a careful review of the facts. He prepares documents and memos that aim to be readable and precise. Courtroom appearances are not the only measure of a lawyer’s contribution, he has said in professional conversations; much of the work he did focused on analysis and problem solving behind the scenes.
Winterhalter’s background in urban and environmental planning informs how he assesses regulatory and development issues. He follows changes in Virginia law that affect local land use and administrative practice. That perspective has guided client consultations and internal firm projects where planning context mattered.
He has continued to work from the Reston office while maintaining bar membership in Virginia. His daily practice has involved coordinating with clients and other counsel, researching statutory and regulatory questions, and preparing transactional and governance documents when projects required them.
After nearly two decades connected to the same legal community where he trained, Winterhalter remains a Virginia-licensed attorney practicing from Reston. He focuses his practice on legal matters for clients in Virginia and serves those who seek counsel on regionally based issues.
